Long before Dorothy's house ever touched down in Oz, two very different young women crossed paths at a university for the magically gifted. One is green-skinned, sharp-tongued, and constantly underestimated; the other is golden, popular, and used to getting her way. Their rivalry slowly bends into something closer to friendship as both are pulled into the machinery of a kingdom run by a Wizard whose authority rests on more spectacle than substance. Adapted from the stage musical that reframed L. Frank Baum's fairy tale from the villain's side, the film traces how ambition, fear, and a hunger for approval can curdle a good-hearted person's reputation. Music carries much of the emotional weight, but the plot leaves real space for political maneuvering, animal-rights subtext, and a friendship tested by diverging values.
