Venus earns her living behind a camera, and some of what she photographs was never meant to be seen. When she vanishes without a word, Mehrshad Karkhani's 2019 drama 2Lake Abr follows the people left searching for her through a Tehran that gives up its secrets reluctantly.

Two women anchor the story from opposite ends of the city's margins. Venus, a working photographer whose assignments sometimes cross into forbidden territory, has been missing for two weeks, and her brother has walked nearly every district of Tehran trying to pick up her trail. Marwa, meanwhile, steps out of a women's prison with her sentence served but nothing waiting for her on the outside — no home to return to and no easy way back into ordinary life. As the search for Venus widens and Marwa tries to find her footing, the two threads pull toward one another, sketching a city where a person can disappear in plain sight and where freedom on paper does not always mean freedom in practice.
