Vitko is a regular twenty-first-century schoolboy right up until the moment an eclipse tears open a portal in time and drops him a thousand years back into old Rus. He does not stay confused for long. Among the people he meets are young Oleshko, powerful Ilya and stern Dobrynya, figures Vitko recognizes at once as the legendary bogatyrs he grew up hearing about in stories. Their world is under constant pressure from Cuman raiders determined to wipe out Rusichi settlements, fighting with blades, siege tactics and, more troublingly, dark magic that ordinary weapons cannot answer. Pulled straight into the middle of it, Vitko has to keep pace with battles against both human armies and mythical creatures conjured by that magic. The journey forces him to grow up fast, trading a modern schoolboy's assumptions for real courage earned the hard way, alongside heroes who were legends before he ever believed they existed.
