Few comic-book franchises end quietly, but James Mangold's 2017 film is a rare exception. It closes out a long screen history for its characters not with a bigger battle but a smaller, sadder one, set against the dust and heat of the American Southwest.
What is Logan about?
Logan spends his days keeping Professor X, now frail and fading, hidden away near the Mexican border, in a world that has turned its back on their kind. That careful isolation collapses when a mostly silent young mutant turns up on their doorstep, with hostile forces closing in behind her. What starts as an unwanted responsibility becomes a cross-country run, less about saving the world than about getting three fugitives somewhere safe.
About the cast
Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart lead as two men worn down by time, playing off Dafne Keen in a striking newcomer performance that drives much of the film's back half.
