Director: Lee Sung-jin
Two strangers cut each other off in a parking lot, and neither one can let it go — that near-miss in traffic is the spark for Beef, a dark comedy about how far an ordinary grudge can spread once pride gets involved.
What is Beef about?
Danny Cho, a contractor barely keeping his business and his family afloat, and Amy Lau, an entrepreneur trying to close a deal that would finally secure her family's future, have a road rage encounter that neither can shake off. Instead of walking away, both begin escalating: tracking each other down, sabotaging each other's lives, and drawing friends and family into a feud that keeps outgrowing its original, almost forgettable cause. Underneath the increasingly reckless back-and-forth, the series follows Danny and Amy's private frustrations — with work, money, family obligations and their own sense of failure — and shows how the feud becomes an outlet for everything else going wrong in their lives. The ten-episode season balances genuinely funny moments with sharper, more uncomfortable ones as the consequences of their fight stop being containable.
Cast & crew
Steven Yeun plays Danny Cho and Ali Wong plays Amy Lau, with Young Mazino as Danny's younger brother Paul and Joseph Lee as Amy's husband George. David Choe, Patti Yasutake and Remy Holt round out the two families caught in the fallout of the central feud.
Context & significance
Beef was created and largely directed by Lee Sung-jin and pairs two lead performances against type for both Yeun and Wong, using the road rage premise as a way into wider questions about class, immigrant family pressure and the private cost of always seeming fine. Its ten episodes are designed to be watched as one continuous story rather than a case-of-the-week structure.
