Director: Imogen McCluskey

A sick family dog forces one reluctant daughter back home for the holidays in "Nugget Is Dead?: A Christmas Story," a 2024 Australian comedy directed by Imogen McCluskey.

What is Nugget Is Dead A Christmas Story about?

When Nugget, the family's aging and much-loved dog, takes a sudden turn for the worse right before Christmas, dermatologist Sarah has no choice but to leave her city life behind and head home to the chaos she'd rather avoid. Her family, it turns out, hasn't gotten any less complicated since she left: old grudges resurface almost as soon as she walks through the door, siblings pick fights over things that stopped mattering years ago, and everyone has a different opinion about what should happen to Nugget. What starts as a quick visit to check on a sick pet stretches into several days of forced togetherness, awkward dinners, and half-buried resentments finally getting aired out. Underneath the bickering, the film uses Nugget as the one thing the family still agrees on, and by the time Christmas actually arrives, Sarah finds herself confronting exactly how much distance she's put between herself and the people she grew up with.

Cast & crew

Vic Zerbst leads as Sarah, with Jenna Owen, Gia Carides, Damien Garvey, Mandy McElhinney, Steve Rodgers, Alec Snow, and Tara Morice making up the rest of the Jennings-style extended family.

Context & significance

Made in Australia and running 87 minutes, the film leans into dry, understated humor rather than broad slapstick, using a beloved pet's illness as a low-key excuse to stage a classic dysfunctional-family reunion.
