Director: Guan Yue

On a remote island where gene-edited crops promise a fortune and a drug lord watches from the shadows, an ex-husband's mission to protect his former wife collides with forces far bigger than either of them in Cruel War.

What is Cruel War about?

Scientist Yan Xin travels to the isolated Yinfan Island to trial a new strain of super rubber seeds developed through gene-editing research for the Hainan Xingye Torch Company, hoping the crop could reshape the region's economy. Her arrival draws the attention of Lin Xiang, a security operative who leads a team to the island less out of duty than out of an unresolved bond with Yan Xin, his ex-wife. What looks like a straightforward research operation quickly turns dangerous as local power broker Li Wenyao works the island's underworld from behind the scenes, and conspiracies start surfacing faster than Lin Xiang's team can contain them. As old feelings resurface alongside new threats, the two are pulled toward a confrontation that neither the science nor the security detail can prevent, forcing a reckoning between everyone with a stake in Yinfan Island's future.
