Meilin Lee is a straight-A student who splits her time between homework, her best friends, and an all-consuming boy-band obsession, all while helping run her family's temple in Toronto. When her emotions spike too high, she discovers a family trait has awakened in her: she transforms into an enormous red panda, a change tied to generations of women in her family and to her overprotective mother's own carefully hidden history. Meilin has to figure out how to control the transformation, or lose it entirely, right as she and her friends are saving up for the concert of the year. Director Domee Shi builds the film around the specific, hyper-detailed texture of being a teenager in the early 2000s, letting the panda metaphor carry the story's real subject: a mother and daughter renegotiating how much of herself Meilin is allowed to keep.
