Released in 1984, Top Secret! sends a clean-cut American pop performer behind the Iron Curtain and lets a spy plot collapse into slapstick around him. Roughly ninety minutes long, it belongs to the deadpan parody tradition, stacking sight gags, wordplay and musical numbers at a pace that rarely pauses.
What is Top Secret! about?
The story opens with an invitation to a state cultural festival in East Germany. When the expected headliner proves unavailable, an American rock and roll singer is sent in his place, a gesture of goodwill between two governments that regard each other with open suspicion. His concerts are the public part of the visit; what surrounds them is not. A resistance network inside the country is working to free a scientist held in custody, and the visiting performer is folded into its plans before he quite grasps what is being asked of him. Checkpoints, interrogations, disguises and a run of unlikely escapes follow, each staged as a joke about the espionage pictures being imitated rather than as suspense.
About the cast
Val Kilmer takes the lead as the touring singer at the centre of the plot, in one of his earliest starring roles. Lucy Gutteridge, Peter Cushing, Jeremy Kemp, Christopher Villiers, Warren Clarke, Harry Ditson and Jim Carter round out the ensemble. The playing is uniformly straight-faced, absurd material delivered as though it belonged to a serious thriller.
Context & significance
The picture is credited to three directors working together, Jerry Zucker, Jim Abrahams and David Zucker, a team long associated with rapid-fire genre parody. A British and American co-production, it leans on the look of mid-century war pictures: uniformed officers, rail stations and prison corridors. Two traditions are handled at once — the wartime spy thriller, with its sealed borders and imprisoned specialists, and the pop musical, where a performer's numbers break up the narrative. The Cold War division of Europe serves as scenery for the jokes rather than as subject matter.
