Director: Alejandro Brugués
A birthday dinner turns into a fight for survival in The Inheritance, a 2024 horror thriller built around a fortune nobody wants to lose.
What is The Inheritance about?
On the eve of turning 75, billionaire Charles Abernathy calls his four estranged children home, convinced that something is coming to end his life before dawn. Rather than simply asking for protection, he ties each child's inheritance to the outcome of the night: fail to keep him alive, and they walk away with nothing. What starts as an awkward, tension-filled reunion curdles into paranoia once the family realizes the threat inside the house may be as real as the one they fear is coming from outside. Rachel Nichols, Peyton List, Austin Stowell, and Briana Middleton play siblings whose old resentments resurface at the worst possible moment, while Bob Gunton's patriarch keeps everyone guessing about how much of the danger he orchestrated himself. Director Alejandro Brugués leans into claustrophobic hallways and sudden reversals, using the single-house setting to keep the family, and the audience, off balance until the money and the mystery collide.

Context & significance
Alejandro Brugués, known for genre horror with a dark comic edge, sets the film almost entirely within one estate over one night, using the confined setting to turn a family gathering into a pressure cooker.
