Director: Kobi Libii
Kobi Libii's 2024 comedy-fantasy follows a young man pulled into a hidden organization built around one strange rule: keeping white people comfortable at any cost.
What is The American Society Of Magical Negroes about?
Aren, a struggling artist, is unexpectedly recruited into a secretive society that has operated in the shadows for generations. Its members have real magical ability, but the society's entire purpose is narrow and specific: using that power to smooth over white people's daily frustrations, however small. Aren is trained in the group's methods and its strict, unspoken rules, and he begins applying them in his own life, including at a new job where he meets a coworker who complicates his sense of what the society is really asking of him. As he gets closer to understanding the organization from the inside, he starts questioning whether its mission actually serves the people carrying it out, or only the people it was built to protect. The film uses its premise to build a satirical comedy about race, service, and self-worth rather than a straight fantasy adventure.
Cast & crew
Justice Smith leads as Aren, with Zachary Barton and Anthony Coons among the supporting cast rounding out the society's world and Aren's workplace storyline.
Context & significance
A co-production between the United States, Denmark, and Canada, the film is a satirical fantasy-comedy that uses a secret-society premise as a vehicle for social commentary, in the tradition of films that pair genre elements with pointed humor. Much of the story plays out across two settings, the society's hidden headquarters and Aren's ordinary workplace, letting the film alternate between broad fantasy-comedy scenes and a quieter, more grounded office storyline.
