Brad Bird's 2007 animated comedy imagines a rat with a chef's palate trying to make it in a Paris kitchen where he very much does not belong.
What is Ratatouille about?
Remy is a country rat with an unusually refined sense of taste and a hero he has never met: a chef named Gusteau whose Paris restaurant has lost its shine since his death. When Remy ends up in Gusteau's old kitchen, he strikes up an unlikely partnership with Linguini, a clumsy garbage boy who can barely boil water, and the two find a way to combine one's palate with the other's hands. Around them the restaurant's staff, its new management and a feared local critic all have their own stake in whether the place can be saved, turning a kitchen comedy into something closer to a story about who gets to call themselves an artist.
About the cast
Patton Oswalt voices Remy, with Lou Romano as Linguini, and Ian Holm, Brian Dennehy, Peter O'Toole, Brad Garrett, Janeane Garofalo and Peter Sohn filling out the restaurant's staff and management.
Context & significance
The film belongs to Pixar's run of animated features built around an unglamorous premise pushed to its logical extreme, and its Paris is drawn from extensive on-location research the studio's animators did in French kitchens and streets rather than postcard shorthand. It remains one of the more warmly regarded entries in the studio's catalogue, admired for how seriously it treats food and craft rather than playing the premise purely for laughs. The voice cast recorded many of their lines together rather than separately, an approach the studio favored to keep the kitchen banter feeling like real overlapping conversation rather than isolated readings stitched together afterward.
