Director: Siri Melchior

Cast: Isabel Birch, Ian James Corlett

Not a Box is a 2025 American-British animated family series directed by Siri Melchior, based on the celebrated picture book by Antoinette Portis. The show follows Riley, an endlessly inventive young rabbit whose single cardboard box becomes a rocket ship, a racing car, a mountain, or anything else imagination can conjure.

What is Not a Box about?

Riley is a small rabbit with a very large imagination. Every episode begins with a plain, ordinary cardboard box — and ends somewhere completely different. A neighbour asks what Riley is doing with a box; Riley is not sitting in a box, Riley is piloting a spacecraft through the stars. Another day, the box is a pirate galleon, a roaring fire engine, or a towering fortress. Along the way Riley meets new friends, solves small everyday problems through creative thinking, and shows young viewers that the most ordinary object can become anything at all when you bring your whole imagination to it. Each short, self-contained episode is paced for the youngest viewers, with bright colour, gentle humour, and a clear message: play freely, think boldly, and never let anyone tell you what a box is.

Cast & crew

The series was directed by Siri Melchior, known for her work on animated preschool programming. The voice cast includes Isabel Birch, who brings warm energy and curiosity to the lead role of Riley, and Ian James Corlett, a veteran Canadian voice actor with an extensive career across children's animation. Their performances keep each episode light, encouraging, and genuinely fun for small children.

Context & significance

For Persian-speaking families in the diaspora, Not a Box offers exactly the kind of bilingual viewing that makes screen time feel worthwhile. The series is available with a full Persian dub as well as Persian subtitles, so parents can switch between languages depending on what the family needs that day — a practical tool for raising children who are comfortable in both Farsi and English. The show's core theme, that imagination transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary, carries across cultures effortlessly. Iranian-diaspora households often balance structured academic expectations with a desire to nurture creativity in children; Not a Box models inventive thinking in every single episode without moralising or talking down to its audience. Short runtimes of around 23 minutes per episode also make it easy to fit into a busy weeknight.
