Grey Bees is a 2025 Ukrainian drama directed by Dmytro Moiseiev, set in the contested borderlands of the Donbas during the opening weeks of a widening war in early 2022.
What is Grey Bees about?
The film centres on two aging former miners, Serhiich and Pashka, whose small village happens to sit inside the so-called grey zone that separates opposing military positions. Their days pass in an uneasy quiet: soldiers from one side and then the other move through the area, and the two men extend a careful, guarded hospitality to each, keeping their own counsel about whatever their neighbour may be doing. Long acquaintances rather than close friends, they measure out trust and suspicion in roughly equal parts, held together as much by habit as by affection. As the surrounding fighting drags on and food, fuel, and electricity grow scarce, the small routines that once kept their isolated lives in order begin to fray. Both men are gradually pushed to reach past the village edge and make contact with the damaged, unsettled country beyond, in search of supplies and of some link to a world that has largely emptied out around them.
Cast & crew
The picture is led by Viktor Zhdanov and Volodymyr Yamnenko, who carry much of it through long, largely two-hander scenes. Their restrained, weathered performances anchor a story that leans less on incident than on the slowly shifting rapport between the two central figures, letting silence and small gestures do a great deal of the work.

Set in January 2022 in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, the film treats its front-line location as a lived-in backdrop rather than as a subject of argument. The grey zone it depicts is the strip of contested ground lying between opposing forces, where some civilians remained amid ongoing military activity.
