More than a century after it sank, Ernest Shackleton's ship resurfaces on camera in Endurance, a 2024 documentary that pairs a modern deep-sea search near Antarctica with the story of the crew who survived losing it.
What is Endurance about?
In 1915, Shackleton's ship became trapped and eventually crushed by pack ice in the Weddell Sea, forcing him and his 27-man crew onto the ice and, later, into small boats for a punishing journey to South Georgia to seek rescue. Endurance intercuts that historical account, drawn from expedition records and archival material, with the 2022 search by the Maritime Heritage Trust, whose team used underwater vehicles to locate the wreck resting on the seabed near where it went down. The film moves between the technical challenge of finding a ship two miles under the ocean and the older story of how its crew endured months stranded far from any hope of rescue.
