Butcher's Crossing sends a restless young man from the lecture halls of the East into the emptiest stretch of the American frontier, and lets the emptiness do the talking.
What is Butcher's Crossing about?
Will Andrews, a Harvard dropout chasing something he can't quite name, arrives in a dusty Kansas outpost and talks his way onto a buffalo-hunting expedition bound for a hidden herd deep in the Colorado wilderness. The hunt is led by a driven, unyielding man convinced this one trip will make his fortune, and the small party pushes further into the mountains than good sense allows. What starts as adventure narrows, trip by trip, into obsession, as the group is cut off by weather and distance from any world with rules in it. Nicolas Cage anchors the expedition as its relentless leader, with Fred Hechinger playing the young idealist watching his assumptions about nature, ambition, and manhood come apart in real time. Adapted from John Williams's acclaimed novel, the film treats the American West less as a backdrop for heroics than as a test that does not care whether anyone passes.
About the cast
Nicolas Cage plays the expedition's driven leader opposite Fred Hechinger as the Harvard dropout who signs on, with Jeremy Bobb, Paul Raci, Xander Berkeley, and Rachel Keller rounding out a cast built for a story with very few places to hide.
Context & significance
Director Gabe Polsky brings the same interest in obsession and physical extremity he's shown in his documentary work to a story that has resisted adaptation for decades, letting the Colorado wilderness stand in for a frontier myth being slowly worn down.
