Director: Corey Sherman
One camping trip and one unexpected crush rearrange an entire summer in "Big Boys," Corey Sherman's 2024 coming-of-age comedy.
What is Big Boys about?
Fourteen-year-old Jamie signs up for a family camping weekend with low expectations, mostly hoping to eat well and avoid embarrassment in front of his cousin's older friends. Everything shifts when he finds himself drawn to one of the group in a way he doesn't have the language for yet, and the trip becomes a slow, funny, occasionally painful process of figuring out who he actually is. The film keeps its scale small and its stakes personal — there's no big villain, no dramatic betrayal, just the ordinary chaos of a shared campsite forcing feelings to the surface. Sherman lets awkward silences and half-finished sentences do a lot of the emotional work, trusting the audience to read between the lines the way Jamie can't quite yet articulate them himself. It's tender without being saccharine, funny without undercutting the sincerity underneath.
Cast & crew
Isaac Krasner plays Jamie with a nervous, watchful energy that carries the film's quieter stretches, while David Johnson III brings easy warmth to the object of his growing fascination. Dora Madison and Emily Deschanel round out the family dynamic as the adults hovering at the edges of the trip, and Taj Cross adds sharp comic timing as the group navigates close quarters and looming discomfort.
Context & significance
Corey Sherman, making a confident feature debut, sets the film almost entirely within the confines of a campsite, using the tight geography to heighten every glance and near-miss conversation. Arriving in 2024, "Big Boys" joins a run of independently minded coming-of-age comedies that favor specificity and restraint over broad teen-movie tropes, closer in spirit to a memory than a plot.
