A primatologist's closest companion turns into the trigger for a citywide catastrophe in Rampage, a 2018 disaster picture that scales a video-game premise up to the size of toppled skyscrapers.
What is Rampage about?
George, an albino gorilla raised in captivity by primatologist Davis Okoye, is exposed to an experimental substance that begins altering his body at an alarming rate. He is not alone: a wolf and a crocodile are hit by the same agent, each one growing far beyond anything nature intended and turning increasingly aggressive as the change takes hold. As the creatures converge on Chicago, the military mobilizes to contain the threat, only to find conventional force outmatched by animals that keep changing shape and size the longer the substance stays active. Okoye races to find an antidote before the rampage becomes irreversible, teaming up with a disgraced genetic engineer who understands what has been unleashed. The film builds from a single altered friendship into a full city under siege, staging its escalation as one crisis after another until the source of the outbreak has to be confronted directly.
About the cast
Dwayne Johnson leads as Okoye, with Naomie Harris, Malin Åkerman, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Jake Lacy, Joe Manganiello, Marley Shelton, and P. J. Byrne rounding out a cast that spans the scientific team, the corporate figures behind the experiment, and the military response mobilized once the creatures reach the city.
Context & significance
Directed by Brad Peyton, Rampage sits in the action, adventure, and science-fiction space and draws its premise from the arcade game of the same name, translating its city-smashing concept into a modern creature-feature structure. The 2018 release leans on large-scale destruction sequences built around its three escalating monsters.
