Buster Moon and his troupe are no longer satisfied with a sold-out hometown stage — Sing 2 sends them chasing a bigger spotlight in the glittering city of Redshore.
What is Sing 2 about?
With his theater a hit at home, koala impresario Buster Moon sets his ambitions on Redshore City and a debut slot at the Crystal Tower Theater, even though his troupe has no real standing there. Getting a foot in the door means talking their way into the offices of Crystal Entertainment, run by a wolf media mogul named Jimmy Crystal, and pitching him something bold enough to notice: casting a reclusive lion who walked away from music years earlier, Clay Calloway. The pitch works before the plan does, which leaves Buster with the harder job of tracking Clay down in seclusion and talking him into stepping back on a stage he swore off long ago.
About the cast
Matthew McConaughey returns as Buster Moon, joined by Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Taron Egerton, Bobby Cannavale, Tori Kelly, Nick Kroll, and Halsey rounding out the returning and new voices in the troupe. Garth Jennings directs again, keeping the ensemble's mix of comic timing and musical numbers as the backbone of the sequel.
Context & significance
Sing 2 arrived in 2021 as a follow-up built around a bigger stage, both literally and in story terms, moving the action from a small-town theater to a flashier entertainment capital. As a family Musical spanning Adventure, Fantasy, and Comedy, it leans on a soundtrack of well-known songs performed by its cast alongside its animation, a formula the franchise built its identity on. Running just under two hours, it gives its large voice cast room for several full musical set pieces rather than one or two highlights.
