Sandra, a German novelist, lives with her French husband Samuel and their eleven-year-old son Daniel in a remote house high in the French Alps. When Samuel is found dead in the snow beside their chalet, investigators are left to work out whether his fall was accidental, self-inflicted, or something else entirely, and Sandra quickly becomes the focus of the inquiry. Daniel, who is visually impaired, is the closest thing anyone has to a witness, and his account becomes one of the trial's central pieces of evidence. As the courtroom picks apart years of arguments, resentments and half-remembered conversations between Sandra and Samuel, the film turns the process of a criminal trial into a study of how little anyone outside a marriage can really know about it.
