Malik and Eric are inseparable, the kind of friends who invent games out of nothing and treat a cracked stairwell like a whole universe worth exploring. It's 1992, and Cabrini-Green — the sprawling housing complex both families call home — is already becoming a flashpoint in the city's politics, its future uncertain as headlines outside the neighborhood turn increasingly hostile. Writer-director Minhal Baig keeps the camera close to the boys' eye level, letting their imagination color scenes that could otherwise read as bleak: a flooded basement becomes an ocean, a hallway becomes a stage. But the pressures pressing in from outside — housing policy, media scrutiny, the fraying patience of the adults around them — slowly narrow the space where that imagination can survive intact, and the film asks what it costs a child to grow up faster than he should.
