A boy's bedroom floor turns into a battlefield of loyalty the moment a brand-new spaceman knocks a pull-string cowboy off the top shelf.
What is Toy Story about?
Woody has been the favorite toy in Andy's room for years, trusted by the other toys to keep order the moment their owner leaves for school. That standing is upended on Andy's birthday, when a Buzz Lightyear action figure arrives and instantly becomes the toy Andy reaches for first. Buzz does not know he is a toy at all; he believes he is a real space ranger on a mission, and his confidence wins over the rest of the room while Woody watches his place slip away. A jealous scheme meant to sideline Buzz backfires and strands both of them outside the house, first at a gas station and then in the yard of Sid, the destructive neighbor kid who takes toys apart for fun. Stuck together with no one else to rely on, Woody and Buzz have to set aside their rivalry, get Buzz to accept what he actually is, and find a way back to Andy's room before the family moves without them.
About the cast
Tom Hanks voices Woody and Tim Allen voices Buzz Lightyear, with Don Rickles, Jim Varney, Wallace Shawn, John Ratzenberger, and Annie Potts rounding out the rest of Andy's toybox. Directed by John Lasseter, the film was Pixar's first feature-length production and paired its voice cast with a fully computer-animated style that had not carried a full movie before.
Context & significance
Released in 1995, Toy Story is widely credited as the film that proved computer animation could carry a feature the way hand-drawn animation always had, and it launched Pixar as a major studio rather than a technical curiosity. Its story about a toy's fear of being replaced struck a chord well beyond children, and the friendship between Woody and Buzz became a template that later family films kept returning to. Its success opened the door to the sequels and to Pixar's broader run of animated features that followed.
