Cage fighting, a family nightclub and a death that does not add up: Bartkowiak, directed by Daniel Markowicz, is a 2021 Polish action thriller that folds a sports drama into a crime story over a brisk 91 minutes.

What is Bartkowiak about?

Tomasz Bartkowiak was once a mixed martial arts fighter with a future, until a bout ended his standing in the sport and left him with a reputation he cannot shake. When his brother is killed in a car wreck, the family nightclub falls to him by default. Running a venue was never his ambition, but the place comes with staff, debts and regulars who knew his brother better than he did. As he settles into the job, small inconsistencies in the account of the crash begin to bother him. People who should have answers avoid the subject; others push him to sell. The fighter who was told he had nothing left to prove finds himself back in a contest, only this time the opponent is a network of interests that wanted his brother out of the way, and the ring is the city itself.

About the cast

Józef Pawłowski takes the title role of the fallen fighter. Around him the film assembles a notable line-up of Polish screen talent: Zofia Domalik, Szymon Bobrowski, Rafał Zawierucha, Danuta Stenka, Antoni Pawlicki, Bartłomiej Topa and Jan Frycz. Daniel Markowicz directs.

Context & significance

Polish genre cinema has expanded steadily through the 2010s and into the 2020s, with action and crime productions reaching international audiences through streaming rather than festival prizes. Bartkowiak arrives as part of that wave. Its mix of ingredients, a disgraced athlete, a family business inherited under bad circumstances and a suspicious death, draws on a template familiar from American and East Asian fight films, but the Warsaw-flavoured setting of nightclubs and local operators gives it a distinct texture. The three genre tags on the title, Action, Crime and Sports, describe the film accurately in that order: the fights are the spectacle, the crime plot is the engine, and the sporting past is what gives the lead character something to reclaim.
