Freshly crowned and visibly out of his depth, Aquaman starts his reign with an enormous backlog of royal business he never trained for. Two advisors keep him afloat: Vulko, the scholar who knows every custom and precedent of Atlantis, and Mera, a warrior-princess whose command of water makes her far more useful in a fight than any council. The trouble comes from every direction at once. Surface dwellers with no respect for the ocean keep interfering in Atlantean affairs, ancient evils older than recorded history stir beneath the seabed, and closest to home, the new king's own half-brother is plotting to take the crown for himself. Each crisis forces Aquaman to decide what kind of ruler he wants to be, and whether he can convince a sceptical population, and his own doubts, that the trident belongs in his hands.
