What is Gaslit about?
Rather than retracing the scandal through the reporters and officials already familiar from a dozen retellings, this series builds its version of 1970s Washington around the people standing just off to the side: a socialite married to a senior administration figure who finds herself increasingly uneasy with what she is hearing, a lawyer drawn into the cover-up who has to decide how far loyalty should stretch, and other minor operatives whose names rarely make the history-book version of events. As the break-in unravels into congressional hearings and resignations, the show follows how ordinary ambition, marriage, and self-preservation pulled these figures into a crisis none of them fully understood while it was happening. It is less a procedural about how the scandal was uncovered than a character study of the people caught inside it, some by choice and some almost by accident.
About the cast
Julia Roberts and Sean Penn play the central couple at the edge of the scandal, with Dan Stevens as the lawyer pulled into the cover-up. Betty Gilpin, Shea Whigham, and Darby Camp round out the supporting cast of aides, operatives, and family members caught in the fallout.

Gaslit is based on the Slow Burn podcast's Watergate season, which focused specifically on the scandal's overlooked and forgotten participants rather than its most famous names. Robbie Pickering directs the series, which uses that same premise to build a drama around minor players whose choices, in hindsight, mattered more than they seemed to at the time.
