Every autumn, an ant colony hands over its harvest to a gang of grasshoppers and calls it survival. One clumsy ant decides that arrangement should end, and goes looking outside the colony for help — which is how a family-friendly adventure ends up recruiting its heroes from the reject pile of a traveling circus.
What is A Bug's Life about?
Life on Ant Island runs on a rigid yearly bargain: gather food, hand it to the grasshoppers, keep the peace. When an inventive but accident-prone ant upsets that balance and loses the tribute in the process, he sets off to find outside muscle to fight back before the grasshoppers return. What he brings home instead of warriors is a troupe of out-of-work circus performers who have no idea they've been mistaken for hired fighters. The colony pins its hopes on this mismatched group anyway, and the film builds its comedy and its stakes out of that gap between what everyone expects and what actually shows up. Along the way, the story turns a tiny patch of grass and dirt into a fully worked-out miniature world, complete with its own scale, danger, and sense of community.
About the cast
Dave Foley voices the well-meaning ant at the center of the plan, with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Kevin Spacey among the voice cast giving shape to the colony and its adversaries. Hayden Panettiere, Phyllis Diller, Richard Kind, and David Hyde Pierce round out an ensemble that leans into vaudeville-style comic timing throughout.
Context & significance
Directed by John Lasseter, the film comes from the same wave of late-1990s computer animation that treated insect-sized settings as an excuse to build entire worlds from scratch. Produced in the United States, it sits squarely in the family and adventure space, using its small-scale premise to tell a fairly classic story about an outsider recruiting unlikely allies against a stronger force.
