Shot entirely through the lens of a handheld camera, this 2007 Spanish horror film turns a routine night of filming into something far worse before the first act is even over. Directors Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza built the film's tension almost entirely out of what the camera can and can't show.
What is REC about?
A reporter and her cameraman, on assignment for a late-night television newsmagazine, are tagging along with emergency crews for a routine segment when a call to an apartment building turns out to be anything but routine. Within minutes the building is sealed off from the outside, no official explanation follows, and the small crew filming the story ends up trapped inside it along with everyone else. The rest of the film unfolds in close to real time, following the camera as it's pushed deeper into the building rather than toward an exit.
About the cast
Manuela Velasco leads a tight ensemble that also includes Ferran Terraza, Martha Carbonell, David Vert, Carlos Lasarte, Pablo Rosso, Vicente Gil and Carlos Vicente. With no wider cast to cut away to and no scenes outside the building, the film leans almost entirely on this small group to carry both the tension and the sense of scale in what's happening around them, scene after scene, without ever breaking from the handheld camera's point of view.
Context & significance
REC arrived at a moment when found-footage horror was still a fairly novel format, and its tight, unbroken sense of place — one building, one night, one camera — became a large part of why it stood out in the genre. The mystery and horror elements are tightly wound together: as much of the film's dread comes from not knowing what's happening as from what's eventually shown.
