What is Wildcat about?
Georgia, 1950. A young writer returns to her mother's farm after a lupus diagnosis upends the future she imagined for herself. Confined to a body that is failing her at twenty-four, she turns inward, and her short stories begin to blur with her waking life on screen, populated by preachers, con men, and grotesque small-town characters drawn from her own fiction. The film moves between the quiet, tense rhythm of mother and daughter sharing a house and vivid, staged fragments of the stories she is writing, using that structure to ask whether suffering can sharpen an artist's vision rather than simply diminish it. It is less a conventional biopic than a portrait built from the inside of a creative mind under pressure.
Cast & crew
Maya Hawke carries the film in the lead role, working opposite Laura Linney as her mother and Philip Ettinger, Rafael Casal, Steve Zahn, Cooper Hoffman, Willa Fitzgerald and Alessandro Nivola, several of whom reappear as characters plucked from the writer's own short fiction. Ethan Hawke directs from a script he co-wrote, drawing on his daughter's performance to anchor the film's shifts between reality and invention.
