Sofía Vergara steps entirely out of her sitcom persona to play Griselda Blanco, the Colombian trafficker who built a cocaine empire in 1970s and 1980s Miami and earned the nickname "the Black Widow."
What is Griselda about?
The six-episode limited series follows Blanco from her arrival in Miami with three young sons and almost nothing else, through her rise as one of the most feared figures in the American drug trade. Rather than treat her purely as a villain, the show traces the domestic pressures, betrayals, and violence that shaped her decisions, moving between boardroom-style cartel negotiations and the more ordinary strain of raising a family while running an underground empire. Supporting players including Alberto Guerra and Vanessa Ferlito fill out a world of shifting loyalties, rival smugglers, and law enforcement closing in, while the series builds toward the standoffs that made Blanco a tabloid legend.

Vergara, also a producer on the project, spent months reshaping her voice and physicality for the role, working opposite Alberto Guerra as her husband and partner Alberto Bravo and Martín Rodríguez as a rival kingpin. Christian Tappán and Juliana Aidén Martinez round out a cast that leans on Spanish-language performances even within an English-produced series.

Director and creator Eric Newman previously worked on Narcos, and Griselda arrives as something of a companion piece, swapping Pablo Escobar's Medellín for Blanco's Miami and centering a woman largely written out of most cartel retrospectives. The 2024 mini-series draws on court records, journalism, and interviews to reconstruct a career that predates much of the more famous cartel history that followed it.
