What is Hagen about?
Hagen von Tronje serves as the steady hand behind the Burgundian throne, a warrior whose reputation for ruthlessness masks a past he has spent years burying. That balance is thrown off when Siegfried, a dragon slayer whose unpredictable nature makes him as dangerous as he is useful, arrives at court. King Gunther sees in Siegfried a means to win the hand of the fierce warrior-queen Brunhild, and enlists Hagen to help broker the match. As alliances form and old debts come due, Hagen is pushed toward a choice between the loyalty that has defined his life and the identity he has kept hidden for just as long.
Cast & crew
Gijs Naber takes on the title role, playing Hagen with the guarded restraint of a man used to keeping secrets. Jannis Niewöhner plays Siegfried opposite him, with Lilja van der Zwaag as Brunhild and Dominic Marcus Singer as King Gunther. Rosalinde Mynster, Jördis Triebel, Jörg Hartmann, and Béla Gabor Lenz round out the Burgundian court.

Hagen adapts the medieval Nibelungenlied, the same source material behind Wagner's opera cycle, but tells it from the perspective of its most morally complicated figure rather than its more famous hero.
