Director: Adam Martinec
A once-a-year family tradition becomes the setting for quiet crisis in this 2024 Czech-Slovak drama, where an old farm ritual exposes everything the family has been avoiding.
What is Our Lovely Pig Slaughter about?
Every year, Karel looks forward to the same event: the family's annual pig-killing gathering, a tradition that pulls relatives back to the farm for food, arguments, and the rare chance to be together. This time, though, the day carries weight nobody says out loud. The butcher is hiding a problem with his equipment, Karel's grandfather can't bring himself to tell him that this will be the last slaughter the family holds, his daughter Lucie is quietly struggling after the end of her marriage, and her son slips away rather than face his parents' disagreement over whether he's old enough to watch. As the day unfolds, the ritual itself becomes almost unbearable for Karel, recently widowed and holding more than he can carry, until the accumulated strain finally comes to a head.
Cast & crew
Karel Martinec leads an ensemble that includes Pavlína Balner, Miloslav Čížek, and Aleš Bílík, with the cast built around a lived-in, almost documentary sense of family dynamics. Director Adam Martinec keeps the camera close to the characters, letting small gestures and unspoken tension carry much of the drama.
Context & significance
