After twelve-year-old Louis is left in a coma following an accident, his mother Thelma finds his diary and reads a list of ten things he wanted to do before the world ends. Rather than wait helplessly, she sets out to complete each one herself, however reckless or absurd, convinced that hearing about them might reach him. The journey pulls a forty-year-old woman into situations built for a teenager's imagination, and along the way it forces her to confront what she actually wants from the rest of her own life.
