Abel is supposed to be studying for his final exams, but he is far more preoccupied with Janka, his best friend, who does not return his feelings the way he wants. Janka, in turn, is caught up in an unspoken attachment to Jakab, a married history teacher who once clashed with Abel's conservative father over politics neither of them will drop. When Abel's oral history exam goes sideways, a single gesture is read as a political statement, and the fallout pulls parents, teachers, and strangers into a fight that has almost nothing to do with the students at its center.
Cast & crew
Adonyi-Walsh Gáspár plays Abel with the specific awkwardness of a teenager who does not yet know how his own choices will be read by adults. István Znamenák and András Rusznák appear as the father and teacher whose old grudge resurfaces through the boy, while Rebeka Hatházi's Janka carries much of the film's quieter heartbreak. Director Gábor Reisz builds the ensemble so that every adult character is implicated in the scandal, not just the two teenagers at its surface.
Context & significance
Set in present-day Hungary, the film uses a school exam as a pressure valve for a society split along generational and political lines.
