Director: Roman Elpidio
Homeless veterans vanish from the streets of London one by one, and what's waiting for them underground is stranger and far more violent than anyone imagined in B.R.I, a scrappy 2023 British science-fiction thriller.
What is B R I about?
Across the United Kingdom and beyond, former soldiers who slipped through the cracks after their service, now sleeping rough with nowhere left to turn, start disappearing without a trace. The trail leads to a hidden London laboratory run by a scientist convinced he can rebuild broken bodies into something closer to weapons than men. One by one, the abducted veterans wake up rebuilt, stronger, faster, and pointed at targets the scientist has judged guilty of corruption the justice system never touched. As the experiment scales up, the line between rescue mission and revenge campaign blurs, and the men caught inside it have to decide whether being fixed is the same thing as being freed. B.R.I moves fast and leans into pulpy, low-budget genre thrills rather than polish.
Cast & crew
Danny Darren leads the cast as one of the reconstructed soldiers navigating his new, unstable abilities, opposite David Cheung and Jadey Duffield in supporting roles that anchor the human stakes underneath the sci-fi premise. Crispian Belfrage and Rodrigo Rodrigues round out the ensemble, playing figures on both sides of the underground operation.
Context & significance
Directed by Roman Elpidio, B.R.I sits comfortably alongside a wave of independent British genre films that trade big studio budgets for inventive premises and a willingness to go somewhere darker than mainstream science fiction usually allows. Its focus on homelessness and neglected veterans gives the pulp premise an unexpectedly grounded edge, using the action-sci-fi frame to poke at questions the film never fully answers about who society decides is disposable.
