Director: Romain Cogitore
An undercover assignment collides with a romance neither side saw coming in this 2023 French thriller from Romain Cogitore. Set against a forest occupation and the fight over a planned dam, the film keeps its two leads on opposite sides of a conflict that's about to become personal.
What is A Place To Fight For about?
Greg is a police lieutenant sent to embed himself among a group of environmental activists camped out in a forest, gathering information over months while posing as one of them. Myriam is part of that same camp, a committed organizer trying to stop construction of a dam that would flood the land they're occupying. The two meet inside the settlement they call the Zone and fall for each other before Greg can find a way out of the assignment or the lie underneath it. Their relationship grows in stolen moments between patrols and protests, with the risk of Greg being exposed hanging over every scene, and the looming demolition of the camp giving both of them a hard deadline they can't avoid.
Cast & crew
François Civil plays Greg and Lyna Khoudri plays Myriam, with Nathalie Richard, Bellamine Abdelmalek, Hugo Rossano Parvez, Arthur Rossano Parvez, Anne Alvaro, and Chantal Trichet filling out the activist camp and the police unit around them.
Context & significance
Cogitore shot much of the film around an actual forest-occupation-style camp, giving the activist scenes a lived-in, semi-documentary texture that plays against the more conventional undercover-thriller mechanics of Greg's assignment. That contrast is the film's engine: the closer Greg gets to Myriam and the people around her, the harder it becomes to treat the operation as just a job. It premiered in 2023, runs 103 minutes, and was produced in France, with the standoff over the dam giving the plot a ticking-clock urgency alongside the romance.
