What is Limbo about?
Limbo follows Omar, a gifted oud player displaced from Syria, as he sits out an asylum claim in a remote fishing community somewhere off the coast of Scotland. Days pass in cultural-orientation classes, dead-end phone calls to relatives, and long walks across windswept moorland while he carries his instrument case everywhere, unable or unwilling to open it. Around him, a small circle of fellow asylum seekers try to fill the waiting with humor, arguments, and half-serious plans for the future none of them can promise themselves. The film watches this suspended stretch of life with a dry, patient eye, finding comedy in bureaucratic absurdity and heartbreak in the smallest domestic details, until Omar is finally forced to reckon with the music, and the family, he left behind.
Cast & crew
Amir El-Masry carries the film as Omar with a performance built almost entirely on stillness and small, exhausted gestures, while Vikash Bhai brings warmth and comic timing as his closest friend on the island. Ola Orebiyi and Kwabena Ansah round out the group of men waiting alongside him, and Sidse Babett Knudsen appears as one of the local officials running their orientation sessions.
Context & significance
Director Ben Sharrock shot the film on the Isle of Uist in the Outer Hebrides, using its bare, treeless landscape as a visual stand-in for a life put on hold. Limbo premiered at the Cannes Film Festival before opening internationally in 2023 and drew praise for balancing deadpan humor with the very real stakes of asylum bureaucracy, without turning its characters into symbols rather than people.
