What would you give up to save a classmate? For Yuji Itadori the answer is his ordinary life. Jujutsu Kaisen, a Japanese anime from 2020 directed by Yui Umemoto, turns that single reckless choice into a story of action, adventure and dark fantasy told in fast episodes of around 24 minutes.

What is Jujutsu Kaisen about?

Yuji Itadori has unusual physical strength but no wish to be anything other than a normal high-school student. That changes when curses attack someone at his school. With no other way to protect them, he swallows a finger belonging to Ryomen Sukuna and takes the curse into himself, so that from that moment two wills occupy one body. Satoru Gojo, regarded as the strongest sorcerer of all, steps in as his guide and brings him to Tokyo Jujutsu High School, an institution that trains people to fight curses. From there the series follows a boy who has become the very thing he is being taught to exorcise, and who understands that there is no road back to the life he had before.

About the cast

The credited voice cast features Megumi Ogata, Kana Hanazawa, Yuichi Nakamura, Takahiro Sakurai, Mikako Komatsu, Koki Uchiyama, Tomokazu Seki and Mitsuo Iwata. In animation the performance lives entirely in the voice, and a story like this one asks a great deal of it: battle cries and comic timing sit beside quieter scenes about fear and responsibility.

Context & significance

Jujutsu Kaisen belongs to a familiar strand of Japanese animation, the school-based supernatural action story, in which training, friendship and escalating fights share the screen. What gives this one its particular edge is the premise itself. The hero does not simply receive a gift; he carries a hostile presence inside him, which means his greatest source of power is also the main threat to the people around him. The imagery of curses can be grim, so it suits teenagers and adults better than young children. Short episodes make it easy to watch several in one sitting.
