A brother's disappearance sends thirteen-year-old Zak into an unfamiliar corner of a fantastical world in Zak & Wowo: The Legend of Lendarys, a 2024 French-Canadian animated adventure.

What is Zak & Wowo: The Legend of Lendarys about?

Zak's twin brother Kyle has vanished without explanation, and the search pulls Zak deep into an imaginary land crowded with strange creatures and real dangers. He carries a jade stone with powers he barely understands, and he doesn't travel alone: his grandmother NaïNaï joins him, along with Indiana, an outlaw who can speak with the world's fantastical animals. Along the way Zak also picks up Wowo, once a towering three-meter pachyderm before the jade stone shrank him into a small, excitable furball. Between mismatched allies and a landscape that keeps testing them, Zak has to grow into the stone's power fast enough to bring his brother home.

Cast & crew

The film is directed by Philippe Duchene and Jean-Baptiste Cuvelier, with a French-language voice cast led by Jérôme Niel, Manu Payet, Clara Luciani, Kyan Khojandi, and Akil Wingate. Production was split between France and Canada, drawing on animation talent from both countries to give Lendarys its distinct visual world.

Context & significance

Zak & Wowo: The Legend of Lendarys belongs to a run of French-language animated adventures built around a young protagonist, a companion creature, and a quest that doubles as a coming-of-age story. The Franco-Canadian co-production model behind it is common in European animation, letting studios on both sides of the Atlantic share the workload on an ambitious fantasy setting.
