Director: Marc Rothemund
A father-son road trip built around football fandom gives this 2023 German drama-comedy its shape, adapted from Mirco von Juterczenka's memoir about raising an autistic son.
What is Weekend Rebels about?
Mirco is a single father whose ten-year-old son Mika, who is on the autism spectrum, has become fixated on one goal: visiting every club in the country's lower football leagues, in person, in whatever stadium they happen to play. The catch is Mika's rules are exact and non-negotiable, and Mirco, already stretched thin, has to decide how far he will bend his own life to meet his son on Mika's terms rather than asking Mika to adapt to his. What starts as a series of weekend outings to obscure regional grounds becomes a wider journey about patience, structure, and the particular kind of love that means changing your own expectations instead of someone else's. Along the way, both father and son are pushed toward a version of connection neither expected to find in a stadium seat.
Cast & crew
Florian David Fitz plays Mirco with a mix of frustration and tenderness that keeps the father from ever tipping into either saintliness or exasperation for its own sake. Young Cecilio Andresen brings unusual precision to Mika's rigid routines and small triumphs, while Aylin Tezel and veteran actor Joachim Król round out a supporting cast grounded in everyday realism.
Context & significance
Director Marc Rothemund, working from von Juterczenka's own account of raising his son, keeps the football backdrop specific and lower-league rather than glamorous, which lets the story stay focused on the two central characters instead of the sport itself. The comedy comes from Mika's literal-minded logic bumping against adult assumptions, giving the film an easy warmth without softening the real strain the family experiences.
