An Italian mob consigliere lands back in Seoul and starts fighting corruption the only way he knows how.
What is Vincenzo about?
Vincenzo centers on a man raised in Italy who works as legal counsel and fixer for a criminal organization there, and who is forced to relocate to South Korea after a falling-out within his own ranks. Once back in the country he left as a child, he finds himself pulled into a dispute involving a building, its shady tenants, and a fiercely persistent local lawyer who refuses to back down. The two end up on the same side almost by accident, and the series follows their uneasy partnership as they take on a chain of corporate and criminal wrongdoers who have learned to operate just outside the reach of ordinary law. Directed by Kim Hee-won, the show mixes dark comedy with crime plotting, swinging between courtroom-adjacent maneuvering and much blunter methods borrowed from its lead's old profession. Its tone stays playful even as the stakes around the central building keep climbing, and much of the appeal comes from watching a character built for one world improvise his way through another.
About the cast
Song Joong-ki plays the title character with a controlled, faintly amused menace that carries the show's tonal balancing act. Jeon Yeo-been plays his reluctant ally, a lawyer whose bluntness gives the pairing its friction and its comedy in equal measure. The wider ensemble, including Ok Taec-yeon, Kwak Dong-yeon, Kim Yeo-jin, Jo Han-chul, and Yoo Jae-myung, rounds out the building's residents and the rotating cast of opponents the two leads face down.
Context & significance
Produced in South Korea and released in 2021, the series was one of the country's more talked-about crime comedies of its year, credited for making a fairly familiar setup, a wronged neighborhood fighting a bigger power, feel fresh through its lead performance and its willingness to let comedy and violence sit side by side. The show's mix of legal drama and organized-crime tropes helped it travel well beyond its home audience.
