Director: Julia Ford
Seven years after a violent relationship nearly ended her life, one woman decides to walk back toward the man who hurt her — this time on her own terms.
What is Until I Kill You about?
Delia Balmer works as an agency nurse in London when she meets a man named Sweeney, a relationship that turns dangerous almost immediately once he tells her, unprompted, that he killed a previous girlfriend. What follows is an assault that Delia barely survives before Sweeney disappears, evading police for years. The series picks up her story nearly a decade later: Delia has slowly rebuilt a life on her own terms, but the case reopens when Sweeney is finally arrested for a separate murder, and Delia is asked to give evidence that could finally put him away. Rather than a straightforward true-crime procedural, the show spends most of its runtime inside Delia's own account of survival — how memory, trauma, and the practical business of testifying against an abuser pull against each other when the legal system finally starts moving.
Cast & crew
Anna Maxwell Martin plays Delia Balmer with a controlled, watchful intensity that carries the series' tension even in its quieter courtroom and interview scenes, while Shaun Evans takes on the role of Sweeney with a deliberately unsettling calm rather than obvious menace.
Context & significance
The series is based on the real case of Delia Balmer and John Sweeney, drawn from Balmer's own memoir about surviving his abuse and pursuing justice years later. Director Julia Ford structures the four-part crime drama around Delia's testimony rather than police procedure, giving the survivor's perspective more screen time than is typical for the genre.
