What is The Rig about?
Out on the North Sea, the workers of the Kinloch Bravo platform are counting down to shore leave when a dense, unnatural fog rolls in and severs every line of contact with the mainland. Communication equipment fails, routine procedures stop making sense, and small physical changes around the rig hint that something well beyond bad weather is at work. As days pass without rescue, old grudges between crew members surface alongside new fears, splitting the group between those who want to keep working the platform and those who think survival means abandoning it. The mystery widens gradually, forcing an already strained team to choose cooperation over suspicion if anyone is going to make it back to land.
Cast & crew
Iain Glen and Martin Compston anchor the ensemble as crew members on opposite sides of the platform's growing divide, while Emily Hampshire brings an outsider's perspective as a company representative caught in the standoff. Owen Teale and Rochenda Sandall round out a cast that spends much of the series in tight corridors and control rooms, which keeps the tension focused on people rather than special effects.
Context & significance
Created for Amazon's Prime Video and set on a fictional platform, the six-episode series draws on the real isolation and safety culture of North Sea oil rigs, an industry with its own well-documented history of accidents and close calls. That grounding in offshore-work realism, rather than a pure monster-movie premise, is a large part of what critics singled out when the show premiered in early 2023.
