Chris Carson works nights as a response officer, the kind of job that puts him first on the scene for overdoses, break-ins and domestic calls before anyone else arrives. He is running on exhaustion, guilt and a temper that keeps getting the better of him, and the show tracks how that pressure bleeds into his marriage and his standing with colleagues who no longer fully trust him. Paired with a rookie partner who has not yet learned to armor herself against the job, Chris moves through a Liverpool rendered in sodium-lit streets and cramped stairwells rather than any tourist version of the city. Each shift brings a fresh crisis, but the show is less interested in solving cases than in showing what constant exposure to other people's worst nights does to the person who has to show up for them.
