Director: David Lowery
Robert Redford closes out a career defined by charm and rebellion with The Old Man & the Gun, a wry crime drama built around one last, unrepentant heist.
What is The Old Man & the Gun about?
In his seventies and still running from the law, Forrest Tucker breaks out of San Quentin and returns to the only work he has ever loved: robbing banks, politely and without a single shot fired. As detectives across several states slowly realize they're chasing the same courteous thief, Tucker strikes up an unlikely romance with a widow named Jewel, who has no idea how her new companion spends his days. The film moves between his string of increasingly bold robberies and the quieter, more tender relationship blooming alongside them, building toward the question of whether a man built for one kind of life can ever choose another.
Cast & crew
Robert Redford brings decades of screen presence to Tucker, playing him with a twinkle that makes his crimes feel almost harmless. Sissy Spacek matches him scene for scene as Jewel, while Casey Affleck plays the detective on his trail and Danny Glover and Tom Waits round out Tucker's longtime crew of fellow outlaws.
Context & significance
Directed by David Lowery, the film draws on a real magazine account of Forrest Tucker's decades-long career as a bank robber and serial prison escapee. Its relaxed, old-fashioned style pairs a classic heist story with genuine warmth rather than tension.
