Gregory Peck plays an out-of-work American sailor swept into a wealthy household's eccentric social wager in The Million Pound Note, a 1954 British comedy from director Ronald Neame. Two rich gentlemen hand him a single banknote of almost unimaginable value, simply to see what having it does to how the world treats him.
What is The Million Pound Note about?
An impoverished American sailor down on his luck in London happens to pass the townhouse of two wealthy gentlemen who have cooked up an unusual wager: hand a stranger a banknote worth a fortune and watch what happens. The sailor takes the note assuming it is a joke, only to discover that merchants, hoteliers and society hosts treat him like royalty the moment they glimpse it, offering him goods and hospitality without ever expecting him to actually spend it. Doors open, invitations arrive, and his standing in society rises overnight, all because of a piece of paper he cannot bring himself to break. The arrangement grows complicated once feelings enter the picture: the closer he gets to the woman he has fallen for, the more the note threatens to cost him both his good name and her trust.
About the cast
Gregory Peck stars as the sailor thrust into sudden, unearned status, with Ronald Squire and A.E. Matthews as the gentlemen behind the wager. Joyce Grenfell, Maurice Denham, Reginald Beckwith, Brian Oulton and John Slater fill out the London society the sailor moves through as his fortunes rise.
Context & significance
Directed by Ronald Neame, The Million Pound Note is a 1954 British production built around a fish-out-of-water premise: an ordinary man treated as exceptional purely because of what people assume he can afford. Peck, better known at the time for dramatic roles, took the part for a change of register, playing the sailor's bafflement and growing unease for comic effect rather than dramatic weight. The film's London settings, from tailor shops to dinner parties, do much of the work in showing how quickly status can be manufactured.
