Vicky Krieps plays Vivienne Le Coudy, a headstrong Quebecois immigrant who builds a life with Danish settler Holger Olsen, played by director Viggo Mortensen, on a stretch of unforgiving land in Nevada. When Holger enlists to fight in the Civil War, Vivienne is left alone to run their homestead while a corrupt local power structure, propped up by a violent rancher's son, closes in around her. The film moves in fractured, non-linear chapters, jumping between the couple's courtship, the war years, and the aftermath, so the audience assembles the full shape of their story piece by piece rather than in order.
