Wind, water and a kite the size of a small sail: Send It! takes an extreme sport that rarely gets its own movie and turns it into a sunny, fast-moving crowd-pleaser. Andrew Stevens directs and also appears on screen in this 2021 American production.
What is Send It! about?
The story begins in small-town Texas, where a gifted young kiteboarder has grown up far from the glamour of the professional circuit. When the chance comes to compete at the sport's most prestigious championship, he leaves his simple roots behind and steps into a world of sponsors, rivals and roaring crowds. The road there is anything but smooth. Along the way he crosses paths with a sharp, street-smart young woman whose confidence unsettles him as much as it attracts him, and who pushes him to prove himself in ways that have nothing to do with a kite and a board. Over its hundred-and-one-minute running time, the film balances big-air stunt sequences on the water with a lighter, character-driven story about growing up and finding out what you are really chasing.
About the cast
Patrick Fabian and Michael Jai White lead the adult side of the ensemble, two performers with very different screen energies: Fabian is known for slick, talkative characters, while White brings the physical authority of a long career in martial-arts action. Claudia Lee, Alexandria DeBerry, Kevin G. Quinn, Weronika Rosati and Dylan Rourke round out the younger cast, and director Andrew Stevens steps in front of the camera as well.
Context & significance
Kiteboarding, in which a rider on a small board is pulled across the water by a large steerable kite, is one of the most visually striking of the modern wind sports, and Send It! leans hard into that spectacle. Andrew Stevens has worked for decades on both sides of the camera, and here he wears several hats at once, directing and acting.
