What is Rise about?
Elise is twenty-six and closing in on the kind of classical-ballet career most dancers spend a lifetime chasing when an injury during a performance ends it in a single instant. Doctors tell her she won't dance again, at least not the way she used to, and the film refuses to treat that as a tidy setback with an easy fix. Instead it follows Elise sideways rather than forward, into contemporary dance, a discipline with different rules, different demands on an already-damaged body, and none of the certainty classical training gave her. Director Akin Omotoso keeps the drama grounded in the physical: rehearsal rooms, recovery routines, the small humiliations of relearning movement your body used to do without thinking. The comedy in the premise comes less from jokes than from the absurdity of starting over in your late twenties, surrounded by people who assume you already know who you are.
