A superfan with four weeks and no musicians promises a rugby stadium a brass band that does not yet exist.
What is Red White Brass about?
Maka is desperate to get into the stands when Tonga faces France at the Rugby World Cup, and the only tickets he can find come with a catch: he has to supply a brass band for the pre-match entertainment. There is no band. So Maka rounds up a mismatched group of relatives, friends and reluctant neighbors from his Tongan community and tries to turn them into a functioning ensemble before kickoff. Along the way the scramble to learn instruments becomes a way for the group to work out old grudges, family tension and what it actually means to show up for each other.
Cast & crew
John Paul Foliaki plays Maka with the manic optimism the role needs, while Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, Ilaisaane Green and Onetoto Ikavuka fill out the makeshift band with performances pitched squarely for comedy rather than musical polish. Michael Falesiu, Lupeti Finau, Lotima Pome'e and Haanz Fa'avae-Jackson round out a large, community-flavored ensemble that gives the film its warmth.
Context & significance
Director Damon Fepulea'i built the film around a real story from New Zealand's Tongan community, using the 2011 Rugby World Cup as the backdrop for a comedy about diaspora identity and improvised community effort. Rather than centering the sport itself, the film treats rugby fandom as the excuse for a wider story about Pacific Islander family life, generational friction and the scramble to represent your community on short notice and no budget. The 2023 release earned attention on the festival circuit for balancing broad comic setpieces with a genuine affection for its setting.
Where & how to watch
Red White Brass is available on K-Time with a free account login, and it comes with Persian dubbing and Persian subtitles so its Pacific Islander humor and dialogue translate cleanly into Farsi. K-Time's Farsi-first design means a lighter comedy like this one is just as easy to discover as any bigger release in the catalog.
