Director: Troy Scott
Two strangers trade careers for a season and discover that running from a creative block only moves the block somewhere new.
What is Notes of Autumn about?
Ellie spends her days managing a small hotel, though she trained as a concert pianist before quietly abandoning the stage years earlier. Across town, Leo is a bestselling novelist whose readers are waiting on the next installment of a beloved series he simply cannot finish. When their paths cross through a mutual acquaintance, the two make an impulsive bet: swap lives for a set stretch of time and see who cracks first. Ellie moves into Leo's writing retreat, surrounded by unfinished manuscripts and a looming deadline that isn't hers, while Leo takes over front-desk duties at the hotel, fumbling through guest complaints and staff schedules he has no experience managing. Neither expects the arrangement to force anything more than a change of scenery, but distance from their own routines starts to surface exactly what each of them had been avoiding. The swap becomes less about proving a point and more about figuring out why they stopped chasing what they used to love in the first place.
Cast & crew
Ashley Williams plays Ellie with a mix of restraint and dry wit, while Luke Macfarlane brings an easily distracted, self-deprecating energy to Leo's struggle with his own success. Supporting turns from Marcus Rosner and Peter Porte fill out the hotel and publishing-world subplots that surround the central swap.
Context & significance
Director Troy Scott keeps the film's autumn setting doing quiet narrative work, using changing leaves and shortening days as a backdrop for two people reconsidering choices they made years earlier. The pacing favors small, observational scenes over broad comic set pieces, giving the romance room to build gradually rather than rushing the two leads together.
